Sermon Text Oct. 14, 2007

Matthew 9:35-38

35Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.37Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." (NIV)

Any thoughts?

take a look at the Greek word for "he saw" in verse 36, if i remember right it is the word for "actually took the time to look in the eye" rather than how we usually see the sick/injured/homeless/etc. compassion is another good greek word.

you could do a lot with "like sheep without a shephard" and "but the workers are few", but i think the most intriging part is that Jesus prays for something, as if God is in control, then later in the Gospel he sends the disciples out two by two to minister, in the same way that workers would be sent out into a field by the farmer.
